August 2018 Newsletter: VOTE! Upcoming Elections and Other Updates

This is the August 2018 edition of the Tech:NYC newsletter. If you're not already getting this in your inbox, sign up now.

In two weeks, we head to the polls for New York State’s primary elections. New Yorkers will vote for party nominees for the November General Election—the offices up for election include Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and members of the State Senate and Assembly. In fact, just last night the two candidates vying for the Democratic nomination for Governor—Andrew Cuomo and Cynthia Nixon—squared off in their one debate before the election. It was a lively affair, featuring discussion on a wide range of issues, including how to best fund repairs to New York City’s struggling public transit system. Notably absent from the debate, however, was conversation around the increasing role of technology in the state’s economy and how innovation can be leveraged to improve the lives of New Yorkers. We hope to hear more from the candidates on this as New Yorkers get ready to choose their next governor.

While the Governor is the head of New York State’s government, the other positions to be voted on are also incredibly important. These officials have the power to impact the day-to-day lives of New Yorkers. In fact, the New York Times recently dubbed the election for Attorney General “the most important choice facing New York voters this fall” and we at Tech:NYC couldn’t agree more.

The Attorney General can and likely will indeed play a crucial role when it comes to the tech industry—and in a race that’s largely still considered up for grabs, it’s all the more important we know all the candidates’ positions. Earlier this month, we made an effort to do just that, hosting a first-of-its-kind tech forum for the candidates with Axios and WeWork. Moderated by Axios’ Mike Allen, we gave all four candidates (Tish JamesZephyr TeachoutSean Patrick Maloney, and Leecia Eve) a unique chance to share their views and talk with voters. The candidates addressed a range of topics, spanning federal and local importance. If you missed the forum, you can watch the video here or read our recap. The specifics of what each candidate said have been reported elsewhere, but all-in-all it was a thorough and productive discussion.

We encourage all of you to head to the polls on September 13. You can check your voter registration status and find your polling place here. As the election season continues, we’ll continue to keep you updated.
